How to secure your Picasso spare wheel

(And it won't cost you a fortune either!)

When we bought our first Picasso a friend of ours (a Peugot driver) told us how the local scallys like to remove the spare wheels from beneath the car and sell them on - a problem that Citroens and Peugots both suffer from.

There are a number of after market solutions for securing your Picasso's spare wheel to stop it being stolen, but most cost a fair amount and some require you to drill through your boot floor - something I'm not that keen on doing.

So after taking a look at the framework around the spare wheel housing I decided I could stop the casual thief from steeling my Picasso's spare wheel for a whole lot less, and avoid making any nasty wholes in the process.

So here it is - the solution:

  1. Go to Halfords, or here and buy a good quality combination bike lock - nice and long - the one I used was 950mm long
  2. Look under the car where the spare wheel is and you'll notice a 'eye' on the left hand side of the frame work, loop the lock through this and then around your spare wheel
  3. Wrap the lock around the wheel a few times then lock the two ends together
  4. Make a note of the combination lock number! It's (hopefully) going to be a while before you need your Picasso spare wheel, so jot the number down in your handbook - I don't want you cursing me when you're stuck on the hard shoulder at 10pm in the pouring rain unable to get your everso-securely locked up spare wheel fro under your car!
  5. Finally, pack out the lock with some grease and wrap a bag around the looking mechanism. Use some electricians tape to secure the bag around the lock. The grease will ensure that the lock will work as good as the day it was bought when you come to open it in a few years time

That should do it - your Picasso spare wheel is now nice and safe from passing thieves and you've not spent a fortune either!
